Welcome to the Nexus Newsletter for March 2018!
The Nexus core team had a busy month in February as we continued to execute on key strategic initiatives to move the project forward. As discussed in a number of prior communications, we are focused on creating an all star team with a roster of some of the brightest minds on the planet. We will soon be announcing the addition of a new key executive who will help us take the project to new heights, as well as create the synergy necessary to plug us into crucial industries looking to utilize blockchain technology.
Also on the hiring front, we are continuing to bring on new developers as well as the continued utilization of contract developers where appropriate. We’re happy to introduce 3 new developers to the community in this newsletter. As we continue to build out this team we are also coming up with new ideas that are helping to shape the future development of the project in important ways that will ensure that the utility of the network is unparalleled.
For those of you who may not have seen, Colin Cantrell also released some highly impressive test stats on the LLD that show massive speed improvements over other technologies. The test compared the Nexus LLD to Google’s LevelDB and Oracle’s BerkeleyDB.
Kierre Reeg, Nexus Economist and Board Member had some insights to share on those tests:
To test the speed he had each database perform 100,000 read/writes, and the total running times were as follows:
- Total Running Time 100,000 read/writes
- LLD: 0.859903 seconds
- LevelDB: 7.714264 seconds
- BerkeleyDB 29.287241 seconds
This means that the Nexus LLD performs approximately 34 times faster than BerkeleyDB and nine times faster than Google’s LevelDB! These are highly impressive stats and it is yet another piece of proof that Nexus is developing the most advanced blockchain technology in existence today. In future newsletters we will break down those tests for you in more detail for a closer look at it’s capability.
The Nexus core team is continuing to reach out to important people in industry, finance and government to help them understand how blockchain technology can help to build a better world for everyone. We are constantly taking meetings that have the potential to help the network’s integration into high impact areas of economy and governance.
We strongly believe that industry leaders will want to build out layer 2 solutions on the best networks in existence with regard to speed, security and scalability; Nexus continues to lead the pack in all three categories. With our exciting new hires, innovative technology and groundbreaking ideas we plan on bringing blockchain technology to the masses to facilitate new forms of economic development and help create a more abundant world for us all.
WE ARE NEXUS!
Here is the latest development update from Software Engineer & Core Developer Brian Smith:
We have brought on three new developers and intend to continue growing. While training and working with each of our new developers we have been continuing our effort on Tritium development. The intent is for them to learn as much as possible over the coming weeks and place them where they fit best in our organization. In order to accelerate the development of the Tritium Interface (The New Wallet) each of our new devs have been tasked with finalizing one of the modules.
This month, we are excited to share with you an update from Phil Swazey who is our Lead Satellite Engineer but you can call him “SatelliteGuy”:
The Nexus One satellite, likely to be known as NXS1, shall be built by Space Inventor (http://space-inventor.com/). To the best of Nexus’ knowledge this might be the first satellite ever purchased using crypto currency and would set a new precedent.
This first satellite will be a 1U form factor which is 10cmx10cmx10cm and launched on a Vector rocket (https://vector-launch.com/).
The planned satellite launch location is the Pacific Spaceport Complex – Alaska which was formerly known as the Kodiak Launch Complex. The satellite is currently planned to be launched into a sun-synchronous orbit.
Operations of the satellite will be performed from Space Inventors facility and tracking station in Denmark. Nexus is also considering whether to build a satellite tracking facility in Arizona to initially receive data from the satellite and perhaps even eventually operate the satellite.
The design of the satellite is very basic, and it will not have a propulsion system on board. It will maintain a 3-axis nadir pointing attitude and utilize a UHF transceiver for communications. Nexus will need to obtain an FCC experimental license to launch and operate the satellite, which has not yet been achieved. Nexus will also need to apply for an FCC license to operate any ground stations to be located in the United States or its territories.
All of these plans may be changed or cancelled at any time for any reason, but the above is the current likely path the organization is heading. Additional information on this program might be further disclosed in the coming months in due course.
Arizona Leads the Way to Become the First State to Accept Taxes Paid in Cryptocurrency
The Arizona Senate passed a bill in early February that will allow taxes to be paid in Bitcoin and other “recognized” cryptocurrencies. The next step for the bill will be attempted passage by the Arizona House of Representatives. If accepted by the House, Arizona will become the first state to accept tax payments in cryptocurrency. Other states including Georgia have made progress to move similar bill’s forward but Arizona is leading the way in cryptocurrency-friendly legislation
In an article in Fortune magazine on the topic, Arizona State Representative Jeff Weninger, who has sponsored similar bills, says the primary goal is to foster technological innovation in the state. He went on to say that this would also send a message to potentially the whole world that Arizona is the place to be for blockchain and cryptocurrency technology companies. The bill, in combination with ASU’s #1 ranking for innovation, could potentially draw not only cryptocurrency and blockchain based organizations, but also many other industries touched by these technologies. Nexus is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, and is pleased to see the state making advancements in policy to move these potentially life-changing innovations forward.

Magic Giant, the Los Angeles based band Billboard Magazine noted as, “Beyond the Headliners: Here Are 10 Awesome Bands Playing Coachella 2018”, stopped by the Nexus HQ on February 28th to play some live music for the team, and to talk about how we can positively impact the world together. Nexus helped to sponsor Magic Giant’s spring “Magic Misfits Tour”, seeing synergies in the bands mission with Nexus as well as looking to educate a broader market about Nexus’s capabilities.
The band began their visit by introducing the team to their music philosophy and playing a few songs, which elevated as the session went on to a high energy collaboration between the team and the band. Following the performance, the team spent some time with Magic Giant laying out Nexus’s plans to create a prosperity- based money system and brainstorming ways to continue to collaborate to bring positive change through the combination of music and technology. After a rousing dialogue, Magic Giant jammed with Colin Cantrell, founder and lead architect of Nexus, rotating instruments and making some impromptu magic!
The band played a lively show at the Crescent Ballroom in downtown Phoenix later that evening to an enthusiastic audience. There are a few stops left on the Magic Misfits tour, so make sure to catch these very talented and special musicians in concert and look for further joint venture efforts between Nexus and Magic Giant in the future.

Why We Do What We Do: A Telegram Conversation
On March 5th, Scott Simon, who helps facilitate tech support for Nexus, had a conversation in Telegram with Flo Adrian from the community. We wanted to share it with everyone as it reminds us of why we do what we do at Nexus, and that we are here for the betterment of humanity. Flo Adrian lives in Romania, which ranks 41st in world GDP. He is able to subsidize having limited resources available to him in his country and high expenses by mining Nexus. His monthly salary working at a car shop is $500 a month, but he is able to earn about $550 a month mining Nexus, which provides him with a substantially better quality of life. The conversation ended with him commenting, “Country’s like mine really need Nexus and we really appreciate what you do.”
A big thank you to Scott Simon and everyone from the Community who works hard everyday to forward this mission!
